GPC/SEC TIPS AND TRICKS: HOW TO TREAT YOUR RI DETECTOR

The refractive index (RI) detector is the most common detector in gel permeation chromatography/size-exclusion chromatography (GPC/SEC). The advantage of this universal detector is that it detects everything; the disadvantage is that it detects everything. A recent instalment of LCGC’s “Tips & Tricks” feature offers some advice when working with RI detectors.

NOT ALL REFRACTIVE INDEX DETECTORS ARE EQUAL

Determination of concentration of samples which do not show absorption in the UV Range can be accomplished by using a differential refractive index detector (DRI). For some process applications however, standard DRI's lack the dynamic range required to measure sample concentrations that are typically higher than in common analytical tasks. Learn more about how we developed an adapted DRI detector to fulfil this application for a polymerisation monitoring customer.
